Abstract
Aluminium base alloys containing at least 2% silicon are modified to improve the microstructure by adding to the molten alloy 0.05% by weight sulphur as the modifying agent. If the alloy is hypereutectic, i.e. contains silicon in excess of 11.7% as primary grains, the effect of sulphur is enhanced by also adding, e.g. 0.015%, of phosphorus preferably as phosphorcopper. The modifying agents may be wrapped in aluminium foil and plunged in the melt of aluminium-silicon alloy heated to 720-760 DEG C. Prior art discloses the adding of sodium to the melt of hypo-eutectic aluminium-silicon alloys. Specific final alloy compositions disclosed fall within the range: - 4.12-23.50% Si, 0.65-0.72% Fe, 0-0.108% Cu, 0-011% P, 0-0.012% S, balance Al.
