Abstract

1419169 Luminescent materials and uses thereof PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1973 [24 May 1972] 24069/73 Heading C4S A luminescent alkaline earth metal fluorohalide activated by divalent Eu is of the tetragonal structure and of the formula where 0#y#0À20, x+y+p#1, a+b#1 and 0.001#p#0À20. Further optional concentrations are given, with uses in luminescent screens, Hg vapour lamps (e.g. high or low pressure, the latter for photochemical processes such document reproduction and hardening lacquers), X- ray intensifier screens in combination with photographic material and c.r.t.s (e.g. double coated screens in which the first is electron excited to emit U.V. to exite the second layer) short and long U.V. and electron excitation is also instanced. Preferably Ca is not present. Fabrication may be by heating a halide mix, or by starting with oxides or carbonates of the alkaline earth metals and Eu, and ammonium halides. Examples are described with successive heatings (500‹ to 900‹ C.) in a weakly reducing atmosphere of nitrogen and 0À1 to 10% vol. of hydrogen. Tables I and II (not shown) include thirty one specific phosphor examples.
