Abstract

PURPOSE: Eu2+-activated composite halide fluoroscent substance, having high luminescence efficiency and excellent phosphor characteristics, which is composed of a specific compound activated by Eu2+ of the fluoride of an alkaline earth metal, the halide of an a lkaline earth metal, and a potassium halide.
CONSTITUTION: Fluoroscent substance having a composition represented by the formula 1, MeF2.xMe'X2.yKX':zEu2+, where Me and Me' are all at least one of the alkaline earth metals, Ba, Sr, and Ca, X and X' are all at least one of Cl and Br, and x, y, and z are, respectively, a number which meets the conditions, 0.80≤ x≤1.50, 0.33≤y≤1.50, and 0.001≤z≤0.20. A mixture of halides represented by MeF2, Me'X2, KX' and EuX"3 or Eu2O3 or a compound convertible into Eu2O3 at high temperatures, together with a flux, MgCl2, is filled into a heat-resistant vessel, and then baked at 600 to 1,000°C in a weak reductive atmosphere to convert Eu3+ into Eu2+.
