Abstract

1417399 Valves HOTPOINT Ltd 2 March 1973 [3 March 1972] 10031/72 Heading F2V A valve for controlling the supply of gas to a burner has a valve head 4 locked in the open position by the engagement of balls 24 in a groove 31 when an electromagnet 29 is energized by a thermocouple when the burner is alight. The valve head, which includes a sealing ring 9 engaging a seat 11 in the closed position of the valve, is moved to the open position by depressing a spring loaded button 8. The button is held depressed until the burner is alight and the electromagnet energized. The valve head comprises a cup-shaped member 14 having a number of U-shaped slots in which the balls 24 are held captive by an annular plate 16, itself made captive by the turnedover heads of lugs 15. Within the valve head is held captive a tapered member 17 to the top of which is attached an annular ferromagnetic armature 19. A spring 23, located in a groove 22 of member 17, urges the sloping face 27 away from the plate 16 to permit the balls to ride up it when the valve is being opened. When the burner is alight and the button is released, the armature is held by the electromagnet but plate 16 moves under the influence of spring 13, which is stronger than spring 23, to force the balls outward to engage the groove and lock the valve in the open position. If the burner goes out and the electromagnet is deenergized, the armature is released and member 17 moves downwards under the influence of spring 23 permitting the balls to ride out of the groove as the head moves to close the valve under the influence of spring 13. The position of the button may be used as a visual indication that the valve is open and the burner is alight.
