Abstract
1415897 Coaxial cable connector PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Feb 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 5569/73 Heading H2E A connector for connecting two solid dielectric coaxial cables comprises a bush 11 connecting conductors 1 and clamping shells 15, 16 connecting outer conductors 3, members 8 of insulating material with two inwardly projecting end portions 9 engaging in recesses, one in each cable in their dielectrics 2. Equal lengths of sheath 4 and outer conductors 3 are removed, sheath 4 being cut to leave a separate ring 4A and a length of dielectric 2 is removed so that an exposed length of conductor 1 projects. Rings 6 and 7 are removed from dielectric 2 forming slots for engagement by projections 9. Part 4A is now removed. Bared conductors 1 are force fitted in connecting piece 10 of unstressed internal diameter slightly smaller than 1 and with internal radial projections and surrounded by envelope 12. Members 8 are fitted. Copper shells 15, 16 are fitted and secured by clamping rings 18 and an elastic insulating tube 17 is slid over or self vulcanizing sealing tape wound on. There may be 2 or more members 8, with slots and fitting ridges at the joints, forming a cylindrical shell. Polyethylene wax or silicone grease may improve sealing. Owing to the presence of connecting piece 10, if 8 and 12 are of the same material as dielectrics 2, there may be ducts 13 to keep the characteristic impedance the same as that of the cables. Coupling members of frusto-conical form may be used for connecting cables of unequal diameters.
