Abstract

1435560 Cable joint ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE (SERVICE NATIONAL) 3 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 36957/73 Heading H2E A moisture-tight cable joint housing comprises prefabricated plastics plugs 4, 8 bonded by solvent or adhesive to the inner sleeves 2 of their respective cables A, B and joined by bonded-on tubular socket member 12. Outward facing plug faces have extensions of the same diameter as the outer cable sheaths 1, stripped of any wrapping; plug and sheath, separated by adhesive tape wrapping 6, 11 are coupled by plastics tubes 7, 10 bonded in place. One plug 4 is shouldered 4a, the other 8 is cylindrical and located by stop-disc 9 bonded near the end of cable B sleeve. In assembly, components on cable A are bonded, and disc 9 on cable B; after jointing conductors 14, 15, plug 8, tubes 10 and 12, previously slipped over cable B are moved forward and bonded in place. To blank off the end of a cable (Fig. 3, not shown) plug 8 is replaced by a solid plug; the plugs may be sealed temporarily by rings in annular grooves. A dessiccating agent may be included in the socket. To open a housing (Fig. 2, not shown) the socket 12 is slit in two places circumferentially, the centre piece being removed by longitudinal slitting. To reclose, before rejointing cables or before initial assembly a plastics ring inwardly shouldered to fit the stub of tube 12, and a new tube fitting over tube 12 but inside the ring are slipped over cable B, and to reclose are slipped forward and bonded into place.
