Abstract

1415652 Joint making packing; pipe couplings; repairing pipe joints AVON LIPPIATT HOBBS Ltd 5 Jan 1973 [5 Jan 1972] 505/72 Addition to 1338251 Headings F2B F2G and F2P A joint between two pipes is sealed internally by a strip formed of layers of flexible elastic material 8, 9, sandwiching between them a row or rows of reinforcing overlapping plates 11, the plates being separated from the fluid in the pipe and serving to prevent the seal being forced out between any gap between the pipe ends by internal pressure. The seal strip may be secured to the pipes by adhesive and/or held in position by an internal band 13 expanded outwards by its inherent springiness or, e.g. by a nut and jacking bolt end flange connection Fig. 6 (not shown). The strip may be applied as a whole or built up over the joint. The plates may be adhered to a nitrile rubber carrier strip 10. The joint externally of the strip may be filled with hardenable packing material 6, e.g. cement grout with an expander additive, a packing 4 of absorbent yarn and an outer covering of lead.
