Abstract

1,260,263. Pipe joints; joint-making packing. SEMPERIT A.G. 25 Feb., 1970, No. 8988/70. Headings F2B and F2G. A spigot-and-socket joint, e.g. for joining pipes of large manufacturing tolerances such as stoneware, clay ware, concrete or asbestos cement) incorporates an annular seal of resilient material comprising in its undeformed state an outer ring 4 (Fig. 3) of mean diameter between 5 and 6% larger than the socket, an inner ring 5 of mean diameter between 6 and 8% smaller than the spigot, and a transverse wall 6 joining the rings at or near their ends, the rings being substantially cylindrical when compressed between socket and spigot in the assembled joint. The wall 6 transmits very little radial force and may be inclined, curved, corrugated or buckled to this effect, while the generatrices of the rings 4, 5 when undeformed, may be inclined at an angle to each other or may both be parallel to the seal axis. A distance ring 7 may be attached to either ring 4, 5 and projects into the interannular gap to prevent eccentricity of the spigot when large pipes are joined. One or more clamping lips 7, 9 directed away from wall 6 (Fig. 16) may project from either ring to bear on the opposite ring and these may be undercut on the side away from wall 6. An annular ring- shaped shoulder 8 may also be provided behind wall 6 to assist " rolling " of the seal on insertion of a spigot in a tight joint and thereby prevent the seal breaking away from the socket. Collars 12, 13 may be provided to abut the ends of the spigot and/or socket, and a projection 14 may be provided on the inner ring to engage one of the clamping rings. The sealing member may be adhesively bonded to either the spigot or socket at manufacture, and the joint may be sealed with adhesive on assembly. Suitable materials for the sealing member are polychloroprene, S.B.R., isopropylene, P.V.C., chlorosulphurized polyethylene.
