Abstract

1,047,764. Seals; bolts; washers; pipe joints. C. R. FOGG, and P. S. BUNCH. Nov. 21, 1963 [Nov. 26, 1962], No. 45914/63. Headings F2B, F2G and F2H. A seal member adapted to coact with a second member in forming a seal comprises a series of projections spaced apart so as to form a series of grooves, and elastically deformable sealing material which is contained within the grooves in a quantity to completely fill the grooves and is confined under pressure by the projections as the members are tightened together. The sealing material, which may be in liquid or solid form, is preferably P.T.F.E., vinyl resin, polyethylene or lead. The projections may be formed under the head of a countersunk or hexagon-headed bolt, Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown), and on screwing the bolt into engagement with the member 16, the peaks 21 of the projections break through the thin layer of sealing material covering the peaks and contact, preferably with deformity, the face of the member 16; the grooves may be U or V-shaped in cross-section. In other embodiments, the projections may be formed on both sides of a washer, Figs. 7 to 9, and Fig. 10 (not shown), or gasket, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown). The invention may also be applied to pipe joints and in Fig. 13 (not shown), projections are formed on the conical spigot of a spigot and socket joint. In a butt-joint, Fig. 14 (not shown), the projections may be formed on both pipe flange faces which are arranged to be clamped on each side of an intermediate washer.
