Abstract

1466137 Pipe couplings SOC A RESPONSABILITE LIMITEE ETABS CAILLAU 17 June 1974 [18 June 1973] 26786/74 Heading F2G Pipes 16, 17 having deformable outer walls, e.g. plastics pipes or metal pipes sheathed in plastics material are retained and sealed in the body 1 of a pipe union by normally frustoconical washers 10 which, by tightening nuts 3 on body 1, are compressed axially against bearing surfaces 8, Fig. 2, in nuts 3 by clamping edges 15 on body 1 pressing the inner edges of the washers into the outer surfaces of pipes 16, 17 as shown in Fig. 3. In the undeformed state washer 10, e.g. a brass washer, shown in Fig. 2, has an outer edge diameter equal to the internal diameter of the cylindrical part 7 of nut 3 and a semi-conical angle of 45 degrees. The outer circumferential surface 11 has a rectangular profile which fits between surfaces 7 and 8 of nut 3 and the inner circumferential surface 12 of the washer has a sharp edge 13 which easily penetrates the surface of a pipe wall. A metal to metal seal is formed by clamping edge 15 of body 1 pressing against surface 19 of washer 10 and the washer is sealed against the outer surface of a pipe by edge 13 and face 12.
