Abstract

1414794 Rope fire escapes N BERRY 3 Aug 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 36407/72 Heading A5A [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A device for allowing descent from a building in the event of fire comprises a non-flammable line for attachment to the building and a carriage for supporting the line and a platform mounted on the carriage for carrying a person, a rotatable supply reel on which the line is wound and a brake device operable directly on the line to apply a braking effort in proportion to the weight of the person. In the Figure the device comprises a frame 28 which supports a platform (not shown) via bracket 29 and compression spring 30; line 31 wound on rotatable supply drum 32 in frame 28 passes round fixed capstan 33 through guide 40 at the top of 28 and is engaged below 33 by a brake device comprising brake pads 34, 35 respectively fixed to frame 28 and lever 36. Lever 36 is pivoted at 37 on the frame and has end 38 lodged in extension 39 of bracket 29. Thus a person on the platform depresses spring 30 applies a braking pressure to line 31 in proporition to his weight. In an alternative embodiment the capstan is replaced by a brake drum around which several turns of the line pass. Automatic braking is effected by a brake shoe acting on the drum on actuation by a lever attached to extension 29. The drum may be provided with a handle to rewind the line.
