Abstract
1410971 Getter ion pumps ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 Jan 1973 [13 Jan 1972] 1678/72 Heading H1D A getter ion pump comprises an elongated anode 16, a grid structure 18, 22 coaxially surrounding the anode and at least a portion, e.g. grid 22 being of getter material, a generally tubular member 12 coaxially surrounding the grid structure and means such as a filament 26 for producing electrons orbitting in the space between the anode and grid 18. The potentials on the various electrodes are so arranged that positive ions formed by the orbitting electrons largely pass through grid 18 and are incident on the getter material of grid 22, some of the material being sputtered on to tubular member 12 forming an absorbing layer for the ions. The inner grid 18 is of coarser structure than the outer grid 22 which has a honeycomb form. End electrodes 34 can be provided to confine the orbitting electrons.
