Abstract
1,003,212. Ion-getter pumps. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. Nov. 22, 1961 [Dec. 1, 1960], No. 41766/61. Heading H1D. An ion-getter pump comprises a cylindrical envelope 1 having a coating 2 on its inside surface of material having good gas absorption properties and acting as a cathode, a grid structure 3 in the form of a plurality of rods disposed in squirrel cage fashion along the generator of a cylinder and acting as an anode, and a magnetic field produced with the enclosure, whereby electrons emitted from the coating only attain the grid structure after having made a number of oscillations. Gaseous molecules or ions are gettered by the cathode coating or are trapped in the cathode coating by being buried by sputtered cathode material. Alternatively, screens 7 may be radially disposed parallel to the magnetic field lines 6, and they are preferably held at a negative potential with respect to the anode so as to act as ion collectors, the velocity of the ions striking the screens being arranged to be too low to cause atomization.
