Abstract

1409974 Two-part couplings COMPAGNIA KALIANA WESTINGHOUSE FRENI E SEGNALI SpA 16 Jan 1973 [31 March 1972] 2236/73 Heading H2E A connector 1 is held resiliently in a support attached to a railway coupling in order to make electrical connection to a mating connector on another vehicle, with protection against damage from impact. The connector 1 as shown, including female contacts 9 and male contacts 8 protected by spring-loaded sheath 3, is retained in a tubular casing 23 in the support, itself held in part 27 of the vehicle by screws set in resilient bushes 32. The connector 1 is urged forward against stops 18 by a helical spring 58, being restrained from rotation by two teeth 54 on its exterior which engage with two longitudinal grooves in the interior of the casing 23: the bush 57 which anchors the rear of the spring is also held captive in the housing by similar teeth 64 which on assembly engage with the same grooves but are rotated into blind circumferential grooves 65 forming a bayonet fitting from which impact and inertial forces cannot accidentally release them. The conductors 15 from the connector are taken via a tubular duct 16 held in clamp 59. On impact of two vehicles the connectors may retract against their springs until flush with the strong faces 78 of the respective supports. The connectors can then engage when the sheaths of the male contacts retract as the connector bodies are urged forward by their springs.
