Abstract

1409862 Two-part coupling BURNDY ELECTRA SpA 24 Jan 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 3513/73 Heading H2E A connector 1 attached to a railway vehicle makes contact with an identical connector on another vehicle, both connectors carrying both insulated female contacts 12 and male contacts 11 protected by retractable insulating sheaths 26 which in all positions leave no direct air path for breakdown of insulation. The semicircular sheath 26 carrying part-cylindrical projecting sleeves 42 round the male contacts sliding into part-cylindrical recesses 38 in the insulating base 4, is urged forward by helical springs in three holes 35 producing a resultant force through the centroid of the sheath 26. The forward movement of sheath 26 is limited by the engagement of projections 33 with inward flange 32 on casing 31. On mating with an identical connector, the female contacts 12 on the other connector engage male contacts 11, and the fixed sheath 5 on the other connector forces the sliding sheath 26 to retract, leaving at no time a direct air path between any contact and other metal part.
