Abstract

1,123,475. Two-part couplings. ARROW ELECTRIC SWITCHES Ltd. 12 May, 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 21030/66. Heading H2E. In a heavy current connector of the type having a receptacle comprising an insulating body 12, 30 having a central cavity formed with longitudinal channels to house contacts such as 16, the cavity opening being normally closed by a spring-biased closure member 40, and a plug comprising contact shoes such as 66 mounted on the periphery of a post 56 adapted to enter the cavity in the receptacle and to be locked in engagement upon relative rotation of the plug and receptacle, the outer face of the closure member 40 is recessed at 42 to form a peripheral rim 44 and the cross-section of the end 56e of the mating post 56 of the plug is correspondingly reduced so that the plug contacts have less travel before engaging the receptacle contacts as the closure member 40 is depressed while the rim 44 quenches arcing as the contacts separate. The receptacle has four or five contacts, e.g. 16, whioh are L- shaped, transversely arcuate and riveted to the circular base 12 of the insulating body and are located in recesses in member 30. The closure member 40 is slidable on a tubular pin 41 fixed to one side of the base 12 while a channelled post 15 on the other side carries four or five terminals e.g. 20, 21 and a combined wire terminal and earthing contact 25, 78 (as described in Specification 1,123,476) which slidably contacts a shell 10 housing the body 12. The plug is of generally similar construction but with the contacts mounted on lugs, one of which 68 is enlarged for polarization and may be employed as an earth contact.
