Abstract
1309033 Two-part couplings AMP Inc 24 June 1971 [22 July 1970] 29630/71 Heading H2E A contact 8 for connection to a tape cable 1 comprises a flat base 9 from which extend, at one end, two upstanding sharp-edged walls 10, and, via intermediate dependent lugs 11, two blades 12 which, with base 9, define a socket for the reception of a mating pin contact 13. Tape cable 1 comprises a plurality of flat conductors 2 embedded in surrounding insulation 3, a flat conductive earthing shield 4 being disposed against one face of insulation 3 and being covered by an insulating layer 5. At a location 7 spaced from an end 6 of the cable, equal areas of shield 4 and layer 5 are removed. Contact 8 is placed with its base 9 on insulation 3 so that blades 12 extend substantially to cable end 6, and walls 10 are pressed through insulation 3 on either side of a conductor 2 below location 7, and are then turned inwards and downwards to penetrate insulation 3 above conductor 2 and make contact with the latter. Lances 14 struck out of base 9 between walls 10 penetrate the insulation 3 below conductor 2. A housing 16, Fig. 2, for the contact-bearing end portion of cable 1 comprises a moulded or extruded resilient material, e.g. nylon, polycarbonate, and has an end wall 17 provided with pin-admitting apertures 22, and two side walls 18, one of which is provided with an internal transverse ledge 19 which latches behind lugs 11 to retain contacts 8 in recesses (23) in the other wall 18. An earthing contact may be connected to the cable so that its walls pass through and contact an unremoved portion of shield 4, and also, if desired, an earthing conductor within the cable (Fig. 4, not shown).
