Valve-gear.-In a nine-cylinder radial engine of either the rotating or the stationary type, the inlet and the exhaust valves r, s of a group of three cylinders are worked by one or more cam-projections a, a in one plane, and the valves of other groups of three cylinders are worked by similar projections b, b or c, c in parallel planes, the rows of cam-projections being angularly displaced to suit the angular positions of the, corresponding groups of cylinders. As shown in Fig. 1, the cam d is rotated by gearing j, h, i, v at one-fourth the speed of the crank-shaft and in the opposite direction, and is provided with three rows of projections aa, bb, cc, displaced from ono another by 120 degrees, each pair of projections working the valves of three cylinders set 120 degrees apart; the three groups of three cylinders are at 80 degrees apart. In a modification, the cam may rotate in the opposite direction to the shaft at half-speed, and have one projection only in each plane.
