Abstract

1407299 Electronic watches SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 20 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971 28 Dec 1971] 58776/76 Heading G3T [Also in Divisions G5 and H4] A display device, e.g. for an electronic wrist watch, comprises a polarizer 45 in contact with a transparent ferro-electric substance 47, and a reflector 46. Light incident on 45 is circularly polarized and the hand of polarization reversed on reflection at 46, application of an electric field to the ferro-electric substance 47 controlling the passage of light back through the polarizer 45. In a modification Fig. 7 (not shown) a reflector (63) and ferro-electric segments (not shown) are disposed between two crossed polarizers (62, 64) of different areas, light traversing the elements (62... 64) in sequence. An electric field is selectively applied to one or more of the segments.
