Abstract
1437862 Electronic watches SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 26 April 1974 [16 May 1973] 18332/74 Heading G3T [Also in Division G5] An electronic timepeice has a solid state display in the form of a transmissive ceramic (PLZT) mounted on one side of a substrate, a driving circuit therefore being mounted on the other. The ceramic contains, titanium zirconium and either lanthanum or hafnium, and exhibits light scattering or double refraction when subjected to an electric field. As shown Fig. 1, embedded in a transparent resin block 5 is a ceramic plate 1 on a metal frame 2, a linear polarizing plate 3 and a light reflecting plate 4. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement of electrodes in 7-bar display form, and which may be mounted on one or both surfaces of the ceramic plate 1. Incident light 6 passes through the polarizing plate 3 and plate 1 and is reflected by the plate 4 back through plates 1, 3. When an electric field is applied to the electrodes the plate 1 exhibits double refraction of approximately <SP>#</SP>/ 4 , and plane polarized light emanating from plate 3 will have its plane of polarization rotated through 90 degrees by the time it is reflected back to plate 3 and so will not pass therethrough. Consequently the display will appear dark when viewed in the direction of incident light 6.
