Abstract

Electro optic display device for electronic watches, with high optical contrast and excellent readability, has two linear polarisers (70, 71) crossed or parallel, with a transparent electro-optic ceramic (66) between them. The two opposite faces (67, 68) of the ceramic have transparent electrodes which are used to produce an electrical field which is longitudinal to an incident light beam (L). The field creates birefringent diffusing centres in the ceramic and tese destroy the state of polarisation of the light beam which was linearly polarised by the first polariser.
