Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a large picture having a black line display on the white background by providing members having means which correct light becoming out of phase by passing through a 1st liquid crystal panel and a member which converts linear polarized light into circular polarized light. CONSTITUTION:The 1st polarizer 1 and a 1st liquid crystal panel 2 formed by laminating transparent electrodes 21 and 22 and orienting films 23 and 24 on a couple of opposite transparent insulating substrates 26 and 27 and enclosing liquid crystal 28 in the space part between those substrates 26 and 27 are provided. Further, the members 3 and 41 which correct the light shifting in phase in the 1st liquid crystal panel 2 owing to birefringence into the same light as light incident on the 1st liquid crystal panel and the member 4 which converts the linear polarized light into the circular polarized light and also converts the circular polarized light into the linear polarized light are arranged in order from the incidence side of the light to the projection side. Then liquid crystal is laminated in the liquid crystal panel in a reverse twisting state. Consequently, the liquid crystal display device is obtained which displays a 400-line large picture whose contrast ratio is 20.
