Abstract

1417958 Modulating light SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 26 April 1974 18334/74 Heading H4F [Also in Division G5] A light conductor 14 with an irregular surface 15 is disposed between an electro-optic display device 1-5 and a reflector 8 so that in use it receives light from a source 10 and enables the display to be more uniformly illuminated over its whole area. As particularly described, the conductor 14 is translucent, e.g. frosted glass, and the device 1-5 is a liquid crystal cell exhibiting voltage dependent optical activity (twist cell) and is disposed between crossed polarizers 6, 7. Alternatively the display device may comprise ferroelectric material. The arrangement is said to be useful in battery powered devices such as wrist watches, in which the source 10 is essentially a low power point source and is used only when sufficient incident light is not available.
