Abstract

1346348 Timepiece glass COMPAGNIE DES MONTRES LONGINES FRANCILLON S A 19 July 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 33744/71 Heading G3T A timepiece cover glass utilizes a liquid crystal 3, with electrodes 2, 5, between a support 1 and a glass 4, which has a layer 6 of light absorbing material and a layer 7 of luminescent material upon its surface. Incident light, which is directed through transparent electrodes 5 by refracting surfaces 8 on the glass, and is reflected by electrode 2 acting as a mirror, is absorbed by layer 6, providing a dark background. Electrodes 5 which are in the form of indicia, when activated, cause the crystal 3 near the electrode to become translucent, thus dispersing the light, indicating the time against the dark background. The outer portions 2', 3' of electrode 2 and crystal 3 may be inclined as shown, or/and the glass 4 may have parallel faces with layers 6, 7 upon an upper roughened surface, the glass having an annular bevelled surface forming a stepped prism or Fresnel lens.
