Abstract

1406572 lonization detectors FOXBORO CO 25 Oct 1973 [29 March 1973] 49728/73 Heading H1D A flame-proof corrosion-free flame ionization detector comprises a non-metallic body 10 having an intake cavity 12 and an exhaust cavity 14 separated by a hollow collector electrode 24, a burner electrode 18 mounted in said intake cavity for supplying a combustible gas containing material to be detected to the interior of the collector electrode, whereby the collector electrode serves as a chimney for the burner electrode, an air intake part 16 to supply an oxygen bearing gas to the interior of the collector electrode in the vicinity of the burner electrode, an igniter 28 for igniting the burner, and an exhaust port 27 communicating with the exhaust cavity 14 for venting the products of combustion. The body 10 may be of alumina and the port 27 may be a hole drilled in the body, or the ports 16 and 27 may be tubes of stainless steel and alumina respectively having an inner diameter of 0À027 inch or less and a length of 1 inch or more so as to act as flame arrestors. The collector 24 and filament 28 may be of platinum. The device has external dimensions of 1 x 1À3 inch and an internal volume of about 1 c.c. so should an explosion occur when using the detector in an explosive atmosphere, its force is weak.
