Abstract

1380180 lonization counters HEWLETTPACKARD GmbH 10 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 52060/72 Heading H1D A thermionic flame detector comprises a flame nozzle 9, inlets for combustible gas and a mixture of carrier and sample gases, an electrode 19 disposed about the open end of the nozzle, a collector 13 spaced ftom the nozzle and means for maintaining the nozzle and electrode 19 respectively positive and negative with respect to the collector. A vaporizer and gas chromographic column 2 are connected to a selective thermionic detector 3 having a cylindrical collector 13 containing a RbBr salt crystal 14. Compressed air enters through pipe 7 and exhaust gases pass out through a metal grid 8 and aperture 6; the grid maintaining a pressure above atmosphere in the detector. The nozzle is maintained at 350 V, the annular electrode 19 at a variable potential between 0 and - 350 V and the collector is grounded. A measuring device 16 is connected to the collector 13. H 2 and N 2 containing an organic sample are supplied to the nozzle. The annular electrode reduces noise by absorbing positive carbon ions whilst organic nitrogen ions are gathered by the collector. A separate ignition circuit may be provided.
