Abstract
The atmosphere in deep mines and similar enclosed spaces is sampled automatically before miners descend. A sampling unit is positioned in each relevant area for detecting gas, and measuring its concentration. Each unit comprises a heating or a sparking element, such as a sparking plug or a carbon arc. Alternatively, a laser beam can be used. This element operates intermittently in an enclosed space, after drawing in an ambient air sample. A controlled explosion may burn out a wire, brust a paper or metal foil diaphragm or operate a stress gauge. This, in turn, may be used to activate safety doors or warning devices.
