Abstract
1405749 Extruding DAVY INTERNATIONAL Ltd 22 Sept 1972 [22 June 1971] 29175/71 Heading B3P [Also in Divisions C7 and B5] An extruded product is made by hot extruding a billet formed of partially compacted metal powder coated with a surface sealant. The sealang may be glass, salt or a ductile metal. The powder is compacted isostatically in a rubber or other elastomeric material bag 1 in a pressure chamber 4. The coating may be applied by dipping the compact in a bath of molten salt or glass or by spraying with glass. In the dipping case two layers of glass of different melting points are applied. Alternatively the inside of the bag can be sprayed with glass before the compaction. If a ductile metal is used for the coating it is in powder form with a particle size one third of the size of the powder particles of the billet. The coated billet is heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere of hydrogen or inert gas before extrusion. The billet may be made of steel powder.
