Abstract
1391540 Isostatic compaction and extrusion of metal powders DAVY INTERNATIONAL Ltd 27 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52563/72 Heading C7D Water atomized metal powder is isostatically compacted cold in a resilient mould, the billet is removed from the mould, heated in a protective atmosphere to extrusion temperature and then without sealing its outer surface is immediately extruded. The powder which may be - 1 mm. iron or stainless steel may have up to 0.1% graphite added to it prior to isostatic compaction at up to 60,000 p.s.i. in a rubber or polyurethane bag. Solid or bored billets may be formed and after heating to 1100‹C or 1250‹C in vacuum, inert or reducing atmospheres the billet is extruded using a glass lubricant after heating and prior to extrusion the billet may be subjected to a carburizing or nitriding atmosphere or a vacuum to deoxidize the billet.
