Abstract

1484255 Extruding DAVY INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Oct 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 52884/73 Heading B3P An elongate metal body is made from metal powder by extruding a hot billet formed by compacted metal powder having a leading end formed of a softer metal than the remainder of the billet, and removing from the extrudate that part which is constituted by the powder of the softer metal. The softer end portion of the billet, which is produced by an isostatic compaction process, is formed from iron powder and the remainder of the billet from alloy steel powder. The billet is heated in an inert atmosphere and is extruded through a die to form a tube, rod or bar, the softer leading end of the billet resulting in a reduction of the initial pressure needed to force the billet through the die.
