Abstract

1401032 Seaming; making thermally insulated vessels DOW CHEMICAL CO 30 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 53071/74 Divided out of 1401031 Headings B3J B3V and B3A [Also in Divisions B5 B8 and F2] A thin malleable vapour barrier material such as a metal or plastic foil with an adhesive layer on one surface is wrapped around the foamed resin thermal insulation of a cryogenic vessel while at the same time the edges of adjacent turns of the foil are joined by means of interlocking formations. A foil strip 261 is unwound from a reel 260 and guided by rolls first to a flange forming unit 270 where the sides of the strip pass between a shoe 271 and a guide 272 to form a channel-shaped strip 261b. The strip 261b which has a thermoplastic heat seal coating is then adhered to the foam insulation (not shown) after which heat sealing rolls 283, 284 join the thermoplastic coating on the flanges 281a, 282 of adjacent turns. Subsequently, the joined flanges are shaped by a flange rolling shoe 286 and a flange folding shoe 294 to the interlocking formation shown in Fig. 15D.
