Abstract

1447532 Laminates DOW CHEMICAL CO 1 Nov 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 50792/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division F4] An elongate heat-insulating member having a generally rectangular cross-sectional configuration comprises a facing body 11 of a heatinsulating material, the facing body 11 having a first surface 12 and an oppositely disposed second surface 13, and a plurality of members 21, 22, 23, 24 each affixed to the second surface and the plurality of members extending generally the entire width thereof, each of the plurality of members having a length substantially the same as the length of the body, the plurality of members being in adjacent relationship to each other. The facing body and the plurality of members are preferably composed of closed cell thermally insulating material, e.g. polystyrene, thermoplastic polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride; polyethylene or polypropylene foam. In the embodiment shown, a reinforcing scrim 26 of open weave glass fabric is disposed at the interface between the facing body 11 and the members 21, 22, 23, 24 and is folded over the outer members 21, 24, a scrim 27 being disposed on the elements 21, 22, 23, 24 remote from the scrim 26. A laminate 15 comprising a layer 18 of aluminium and a layer 19 of a heat sealable adhesive, e.g. an ethylene/ acrylic acid copolymer or an epoxy resin having a J-shaped configuration forming a flange 17 is affixed to the surface 12 of body 11, a plurality of transverse corrugations 29 formed in the laminate 15 extending towards the J-shaped edge and a plurality of generally continuous beads of a heat-activatable adhesive, e.g. bitumen being disposed on the outer surface of the laminate 15 remote from the J-shaped fold. The members of the invention may be used to insulate a cryogenic vessel.
