Abstract

Telecommunication cables which are longitudinally sealed to water and contain conductors insulated by a plastic material are produced continuously by (a) introducing the finished cable core into a chamber provided with two tubular-extensions for the passage of the cable core, the extensions having openings adapted to the dia. of the cable core, (b) forcing the sealing material into the chamber under press. into and around the cable core, (c) cooling the tubular extensions during the displacement of the cable core by a cooling agent flowing countercurrent to the passage of the core, applying a paper sheet to the cable core after it leaves the tubular extension, (e) placing a metallic foil, pref. coated on one or both sides with an ethylene copolymer, directly over the paper sheet and (f) applying the exterior cover. The sealing material is covered immediately after leaving the application device so that contamination is avoided. Migration of the sealing material is prevented by the cooling operation. The cable is produced rapidly and economically.
