Abstract
1399596 Hydraulic reciprocating motors MACTAGGART SCOTT & CO Ltd and R C RUSSELL 6 June 1972 [12 June 1971] 27618/71 Heading F1A In an hydraulic motor comprising a rotary hub 10 splined to a shaft 20 and having radial pistons 11 over which cylinders 12 slide, a hollow cylindrically stepped distributor valve member 31 is capable of limited axial movement in a housing port 30, fluid pressure in annual chambers 5 1a, 52a, 53a, 54a acting on the valve member to urge it against the end face of the hub 10. For full torque operation two of the annular chambers e.g. 52a, 54a are connected to a supply of pressure fluid and the other two (e.g. 51a, 53a) to exhaust. Passages 55, 56, 57, 58 in the valve member 31 connect the annular chambers to axial passages 19 in the hub 10. Then as the hub rotates each axial passage 19 alternately receives fluid from and exhausts fluid to the valve passages 55-58. The consequential reciprocation of the cylinders 12 causes rotation of the hub due to the cooperation of rollers 16 on the cylinders with multi-lobed cam tracks fixed between housing ports 23, 25, 26. Half torque operation can be obtained by providing a valve, Fig.4 (not shown) which is operable to connect one annular chamber to supply and a second to exhaust, the remaining annular chambers being inter-connected, whereby fluid leaving a cylinder previously charged with high pressure fluid from the one annular chamber flows via the valve and the inter-connected annular chambers back into and out of a cylinder before exhausting through the second annular chamber. A brake wheel 69 is splined to the shaft 20 and carries plates 70 disposed between plates 71 fixed to a housing port 67. Springs 73 force, via a member 72, the plates 70, 71 into contact, the force of the springs being overcome by supplying fluid to a chamber 74 thereby to move the member 72 away from the plates. In a second embodiment, Fig.1 (not shown) the valve member 31 has only two annular chambers.
