Abstract

1352514 Hydraulic reciprocating motors or pumps SELF-CHANGING GEARS Ltd 23 June 1971 [23 March 1970] 13916/70 Heading F1A In a radial piston hydraulic motor or pump, e.g. a vehicle wheel motor, comprising a cylinder block 1 and multi-lobed cam assembly 10 arranged for relative rotation, the block has a plurality of banks of cylinders 4, and a pintle valve assembly 22 is axially slidable within a control sleeve 21 fixed to the cam assembly to make successive banks of cylinders 4 inoperative. In the wheel motor shown, cam assembly 10 rotates with the vehicle wheel attached to flange 18. Sleeve 21 and pintle valve assembly 22 rotate with the cam assembly, sets of ports 26 to 29 in sleeve 21 sequentially connecting cylinder ports 6 to 9 with supply and discharge passages defined by radial vanes within pintle valve sleeve 23, Fig. 2 (not shown). The pintle valve passages communicate with supply and discharge lines via control sleeve passages 30, 32 and connections 33, 34 and 31, 35 respectively. Control rod 48 moves pintle valve assembly 22 axially against spring 49 to cut-off successive sets of control sleeve ports 26 to 28 from the pintle valve passages, pintle sleeve ports 36 to 42 connecting the passages with the remaining operative cylinders and maintaining communication between the passages and control sleeve supply and discharge passages 30, 32. A pressure-relief valve 50 maintains a pressure in the casing interior sufficient to hold the inoperative pistons 5 inwardly of their cylinders, the inner ends of the inoperative cylinders being vented via spaces 61, 58 and pressurerelief passage 59. A brake drum 19 is attached to wheel flange 18. For pump operation, the cam and valve assembly is fixed and the cylinder block rotated. Ball pistons 5 may be replaced by rollers reciprocating in slots in the block.
