Abstract
1398726 Protecting tuyeres CREUSOTLOIRE and E SPRUNCK 11 Aug 1972 [21 Sept 1971] 37605/72 Heading F4B A tuyere in a metallurgical converter is protected by feeding a carbon containing material in viscous, pasty or compressed powder form to a supplementary conduit of the tuyere. The carbonaceous material may be a grease, pitch or tar, a heavy fuel oil, powdered coke or a suspension of powdered carbon in fuel oil, or a solution of paraffin wax, pitch or petroleum coke in fuel oil. The protective material may be a mixture of tar and powdered refracting lining material. The supplementary conduit or conduits preferably surrounds the main blowing passage, and an intermediate conduit may feed air, a neutral gas, steam or water between a stream of oxygen from the main passage and the stream of protective material. The feed of protective material is under sufficient pressure to enable it to be regulated to counteract wear on the tuyere or blockage of the blowing conduit.
