Abstract
1366725 Preserving furnace walls CREUSOTLOIRE and E SPRUNCK 27 March 1972 [30 March 1971 20 Oct 1971] 14248/72 Heading F4B The rate of wear of a refractory furnace wall is reduced by applying a carbon-donating substance to the wall in fluid or paste-like form adapted to cause the deposit of carbon particles on the wall. The substance used may contain carbon or coal particles or it may be a hydrocarbon such as fuel oil or heated tar sprayed on to the wall by pressurized nitrogen or hydrocarbon gas. The liquid hydrocarbon is cracked by the heat of the furnace wall to deposit carbon. The substance used may be painted on to the wall instead of being sprayed. In a converter, Fig. 2, the carbon-donating substance is applied the wall by one or more lines of tuyeres 6, 9, 12, 15 passing through the wall at spaced points and sprayed against the wall opposite. Oxygen is supplied through tuyere 5 for refining. The amount of carbon-donating substance applied to the walls of the converter may be more than the amount theoretically sufficient to ensure zero wear of the wall. The refractory materials of the wall may be initially impregnated with a carbon-donating substance, e.g. tar.
