Abstract
Finely powdered iron ore, opt. mixed with a slagging agents, is injected into a non-oxidising gas, which contains products derived from the reformation of a hydrocarbon fluids pref. a suspension of carbon powder with a particle size below 2 mm in a hydrocarbon-contg. liquid or gas and then recovering the ferrous metal obtd. by reduction. The iron ore is reduced rapidly under very economical conditions. The excess of gas into which the ore is introduced retains a considerable reducing power which can be used in other operations e.g. coke ovens.
