Abstract
1398705 Electric incandescent lamps; thermistors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 27 Feb 1974 [8 March 1973] 8813/74 Headings H1F and H1K [Also in Division H2] A ceramic resistor comprising one or more oxides of vanadium having the composite formula V 2 O x (3<x<5) and having a negative temperature coefficient of resistance is connected in series with the filament of an electric incandescent lamp to limit the current inrush when the lamp is switched on to full operating voltage. The resistor may be disposed inside the envelope or cap of the lamp or sealed through the envelope where it serves as a lead-in conductor: alternatively the resistor may be completely external to and mechanically independent of the lamp. The resistor has a value at room temperature of between 0À5 and 2 times the hot resistance of the filament, this value decreasing, as the resistor heats up to about 70‹ C., to approximately 1% of the hot resistance of the filament at the same time as the filament itself heats up to its working temperature, the heating time being in the range of 0À1 to 8 seconds. The total mass of the resistor may be in the range of 16 to 32 times the mass of the filament, and the resistor contains 70%-98% by weight of vanadium oxide crystals and 2%- 30% by weight of binder glasses, the glasses containing at least 10% by weight of V 2 O 5 .
