Abstract

PURPOSE:To protect the lighting circuit by connecting a resistor having specific resistance in parallel with a circuit including a heat responsive switch for starting the discharge of a light emission tube thereby regulating the magnitude of the surge at the starting. CONSTITUTION:A light emission tube 1 encapsulated with mercury, sodium and xenon, and a starting circuit constituted of a series circuit of a filament-shaped current limiting resistor 10 and a heat responsive switch 11 are connected in parallel in an outer tube 9 of a high pressure sodium lamp, while a resistor 12 having the resistance lower than 50KOMEGA is provided in a base 4 in parallel with the light emission tube 1. Then they are connected through a ballast 7 to the power source 8. Consequently the fluctuation of the surge voltage at the starting caused by the fluctuation of the current limiting resistor 10 can be controlled by the resistor 12, thereby the lighting circuit for the ballast isn't broken and the reliability is improved.
