Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a runaway and breakdown of a surge absorbing element and, thereby, a lighting failure of a lamp by connecting the surge absorbing element in parallel with a circuit part which contains a thermal switch of a starting circuit. CONSTITUTION:A built-in starting circuit 11 which contains a thermal switch 12 is connected in parallel with a luminous tube 1 so as to impress a surge current, which is generated when the thermal switch operates, on the luminous tube 1. One end of a surge absorbing element 18 is connected with the other electrode 3 of the luminous tube 1 through a thermal switch 17 provided in series with both element 18 and electrode 3, and the surge absorbing element 18 is connected in parallel with a circuit part which contains the thermal switch 12 of the starting circuit 11. After starting, the thermal switch 17 becomes off, and no electric current flows to the surge absorbing element 18, and, accordingly, no runaway or breakdown of the surge absorbing element 18 occurs.
