Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent generation of any unusually high voltage pulse by installing a micro-gap-type surge absorbing element in a discharge tube outer bulb, which is fitted with a starter which applied high voltage pulses. CONSTITUTION:A starter made of a series circuit consisting of a resistance (F) and a heat-responsive switch (Bs), is connected in parallel to a discharge tube (L). Next, a series circuit consisting of a resistance (R) and a micro-gap-type surge absorbing elemnt (D) is connected to the discharge tube (L), and is connected to a power source (P) by means of a ballast (Ba). The absorbing element (D) is constituted by preparing a mullite porcelain case or the like 7 from a number of conductive ceramic films 5 and filaments 6 placed between the films 5, fixing caps 3 and 4 to both ends of the case 7, and installing the case 7 in an airtight case 2 charged with a rare gas. Consequently, the absorbing element (D) can be made extremely small, and is enabled to be incorporated in a discharge tube outer bulb (S). Besides, any unusually high voltage pulse can be prevented owing to the excellent responsive performacne of the element (D), and the safety of a high pressure electric-discharge lamp can be increased.
