Abstract

1396230 Pistons LINDE AG 13 June 1973 [21 July 1972] 28080/73 Heading F2T A piston comprises a sleeve 6 having at least a proportion of PTFE, having labyrinth grooves 9-15, and shrunk on to a metal cylindrical member 2, the sleeve 6 being operatively in sliding engagement with the cylinder wall 4 at an elevated operating temperature, and being spaced to form a labyrinth seal at lower temperatures. The member 2 and a component 1, Fig. 1, may together form a piston body, or the cylindrical member may be a metal sleeve 27, Fig. 2, held between two sections 21, 22. Also, Fig. 3 (not shown), the PTFE sleeve (32) may be shrunk on to a metal sleeve (33) attached to a piston skirt (35) by screws (34). The labyrinth grooves may be of generally square, U, V, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), or of notched section, Fig. 6, arranged to open respectively towards the swept cylinder volumes 7, 8. Also, Fig. 6, the PTFE sleeve may be axially retained by a helical thread on the cylindrical member on to which it is shrunk.
