982,860. Piston and stuffing-box packing. D. A. VENTRESS. Aug. 28, 1962 [Sept. 13, 1961], No. 33018/62. Headings F2B and F2T. Sealing means between relatively reciprocable parts, for example a cylinder 1 and a piston 2 or a cylinder end wall 11 and a pistonrod 3, comprises a resilient O-ring 10, 15 which is housed in a peripheral groove 5, 12 in one of the members for rolling movement therein, which is retained by the sides of the groove against axial movement during relative reciprocating movement of the members. The groove is V-shaped and its walls are surfaced with polytetrafluoroethylene 8, 14. During operation the ring 10, 15 rolls on the cylinder wall 9 or the rod surface 16 and rolls and slips simultaneously in the groove 5, 12.
