Abstract

1396095 Marine propulsion LO KAM CHU 16 Jan 1974 02015/74 Heading B7V A marine craft comprises a hull 9 enclosing a forward passenger or freight section 11 and a rear engine section 13, the hull being surrounded by a single buoyant endless track 14 which runs over the top of the hull underneath a hood 15 and back beneath the hull 9, the lower run of the track providing sufficient buoyancy to hull the craft out of the water and the track 14 being driven round the hull by engine driven pinions 34 engaging racks 33 formed in the track, on both the top and bottom runs of the track 14. The track is composed of a number of rigid transverse elements 23 (one of which is shown in Fig. 5) the elements being interconnected by transverse pivot pins. Each element comprises a centre buoyant section 24 and two end buoyant sections 25 interconnected by members 26. The buoyant sections include tanks having walls of metal or plastics material preferably filled with an expanded plastics material. The members 26 include sections of the driving racks 33 and rollers 28 which run on rails 29 on the hull 9. Plates 27 at each end of each element 23 carry rollers 30 running on flange guide rails 31 on the hull 9 to limit separation of the track 14 and the hull. The plates 27 of adjacent elements 23 overlap to reduce friction when the craft is under way. The gaps formed between adjacent elements 23 when passing round the bow and stern of the hull 9 is maintained closed to prevent ingress of rubbish by plates projecting from one element underlapping the buoyant sections of the adjacent element 23. A rudder 21 for steering and screw propellers (not shown) for additional propulsion are also provided.
