Abstract

745,298. Plastic boat and ship construction. ROBERTS, H. B., and WOOD, E. S. March 31, 1953, No. 8915/53. Class 113. In a plastic ship or boat constructed by fabricating and moulding resinous material into a plurality of ship sections 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 designed and dimensioned to form a ship hull when assembled together, the sections are each shaped at their meeting edge 50 arcuately inboard of the section for providing a fillet receiving groove 54 when the sections are assembled in juxtaposition, the moulded sections are placed in contiguous assembled position and the grooves are filled with a fillet of resinous material in bonding contact with the walls of the groove, the fillet being allowed to set, thus firmly joining the hull sections in a continuous homogeneous and unitary self-sustaining structure. A transverse bracing sheet 104 may be disposed between the marginal areas 50 of adjacent sections. The sections comprise a plastic skin 44 with external longitudinal stiffener welts 30, 34 and spaced transverse welts 46. The port and starboard sections of each complete section may be moulded separately and there may be a separate keel section, which sections, as shown in Fig. 6 have melting edges 50 and are joined by fillets 54. The keel section is recessed to house a moulded plastic keel 62 held in place by plastic resinous fillets 57 and 59. Compartments are provided by horizontally and vertically extending sheets of moulded resinous material 106, 108, 110, 112, joined together and to the sides of the ship by resinous fillets 55. The welts 46 are built-up and continued by polyester resin material and the joints strengthened by U-shaped clamps 52 over the flanges 50. A non-skid pattern finish is moulded into the deck. If the vessel is a landing craft it is provided with a moulded ramp 80 hinged at 100, which ramp has stiffeners serving as treads and may be provided with an armour sheet. The ship may be provided with an armour sheet 116 (Fig. 10), fastened to the welts 30 by partially melting the armour sheet or the welts. Fastening screws 120 may be used; 122 is a flotation material.
