139,542. Hopwood, F. L. Dec. 11, 1918. Locating subaqueous sound.-A baffle or screen for giving a hydrophone unidirectional properties, so that the direction of the sound source may be determined, comprises a plate-likei member A having a recess B constituting a shallow chamber in which a measured and variable quantity of liquid, not filling the chamber, is placed. The chamber may also contain loose bodies, such as lead shot. The wall A<1> is relatively thin. The opposite wall C in the form of a closure to the mouth of the recess may be thick or thin and secured in any suitable manner. As shown, the closure C is thick, with an overhanging flange C<1>, under which a packing-washer D is placed, and is screwed into the recess. The member C has two openings through one of which liquid &c. is introduced, the other serving as an air vent. The openings are then closed either by permanent seals or removable plugs E. The screen is preferably made of xylonite, but may be of ebonite, glass, lead, brass, or other metal. Fresh or salt water, oil, and rubber solution are mentioned as liquids which may be employed.
