304,173. Ryan, C. P., and Hervey, R. G. April 24, 1918. Detecting subaqueous sounds.-Receiving instruments for detecting submarine sounds, apart from undesired water noises, are mounted in a body of yielding material such as .rubber so as to be completely imhedded therein, with an interposed medium of fluid, liquid or jelly nature to transmit the vibrations to the receiver. A rubber body a, conveniently moulded in two parts, is made of stream-line or other form, with steadying fins a<1> to contain a cylindrical brass casting b weighted at b<1> and having a forward neck c to take the towing cable, which also contains the leads for the microphone. The neck is closed with a rubber bung d, washer e and screwed cap f. A diaphragm h of metal, mica, rubber or other material is clamped to the cylinder b, which is massive enough to absorb local tremors, and carries a microphone i or other receiver. A casing a* adjacent to the diaphragm is filled with air, fluid or jelly, the latter being introduced in a liquid form for subsequent solidification. The cable is employed for mooring or towing.
