Abstract
1395426 Blasting WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 5 Feb 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 05269/74 Heading B3D A method of cutting material 11, such as a quartz crystal, aluminium, sheet steel, glass or ceramics, comprises covering the surface of the material at a cutting site with liquid 26 and propelling a stream of abrasive particles 13 carried in a fluid 14 through the liquid and against the surface of the material at the site so as to cut the material. The abrasive particles 13 may be sand, silicon carbide, boron carbide, aluminium oxide, or the like and is propelled at between 20 and 120 p.s.i. from the nozzle 12 of a tool 10 by fluid, such as air, nitrogen, alcohol or water, against the surface of the material which is immersed in the liquid 26, which may be oil, alcohol, water or refrigerant or has the liquid confined to the site to be cut. The nozzle 12 may be above or immersed in the liquid and the cut 21 produced by the abrasive particles is stated to have substantially parallel sides 22. The method may be applied to the cutting of a monolithic crystal filter which is carried by supports in a tank, the supports being vertically movable to immerse or raise the filter from the liquid in the tank.
