Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve linear light-transmissibility of polycrystalline transparent alumina porcelain upto more than 80% by smoothing its surface in such a way that a suitable amount of grind granules which are harder than alumina and of which average diameter is less than 18mu is put into barreling vessel together with unual grind stones. CONSTITUTION:A required amount of grind granules 2 of such materials harder than alumina as, for example, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, boron carbide, cubic crystalline boron nitride, diamond or the like, and the average diameter of which granules 2 is less than 18mu is put into barreling vesel togehter with usual grindstones 1, in such a rate of the required amount that is more than 10g per 1 liter of interior volume of the vessel. Barrel finishing for polycrystalline transparent alumina porcelain is carried out in the vessel thus conditioned. Then, the grind pranules 2 of average diameter less than 18mu will interpose between the usual grindstones 1 so as to fill spaces therebetween and to become in contact with the whole surface of the alumina porcelain 3, so that the whole surface is smoothed, resulting that the linear light-transmissibility of the alumina porcelain can be attained upto more than 80%.
